DAVIESS CO., Ky. (WFIE) - All schools in Daviess County, Owensboro, including catholic schools, and Hancock County are closed Thursday and Friday due to absences.
You can keep track of school closings here.
Owensboro Public Schools superintendent Matthew Constant says closing the schools will allow janitors to deep clean the school buildings without students and teachers there. He says attendance has dropped significantly.
Constant says it’s usually in the 95 percent range.
“We made that decision internally," says Constant. "We’ve got a few of our schools that are in the mid to upper 80s on percentages of attendance and when you start seeing that it starts to be a red flag about potentially closing.”
Constant says he hopes students and staff can get healthy over the four day weekend, ready to work as usual on Monday.
On Facebook, the Hancock County Public Schools Communication page posted there will be no school on Thursday or Friday. This closure is because of widespread illness in the school district, the post says.
On Thursday, more schools announced closures for the upcoming days.
Webster County will be closed on Friday. Ohio County schools will be closed on Friday, but also on the following Monday
