Police: Teen shot and killed after pulling gun first, shooter not charged

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - Police say one person was shot and killed at a home on Fulton Avenue, right across from Cedar Hall Elementary School.

It happened late Monday night.

The coroner says the person who was killed is 18-year-old DeAndre Ellington.

His autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.

Police say Ellington was found on the sidewalk and died at the hospital.

They say he had met with several people to sell a gun. Officers say, according to witnesses, Ellington pointed a gun at the group and tried to rob them.

They say one person from the group pulled out a gun and shot Ellington.

Police say that person has been interviewed and has not been charged at this time.

Officers say two guns found next to Ellington were collected by investigators, as well as the gun that was used to shoot him.

David Regalado, a neighbor who lives near where the shooting happened, said he was just arriving home as police were on scene.

“Nothing happens around here," said Regalado. "It’s like a safe haven area. The school’s right across the street. Police are always around here. You wouldn’t think anything would happen around here. It’s a tragedy. It’s sad.”

He said his daughter also lives on the same block.

“I was worried about my family not knowing what had happened,” said Regalado.

Regalado said it’s a wake-up call for neighbors to be on alert and look out for each other.

“It’s everywhere. It’s not just in this area," said Regalado. "We just have to be careful, and know who our neighbors are.”
