EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - The Evansville Dream Center hosted a free event on Wednesday to serve up Thanksgiving favorites for free and give thanks.
Organizers tell us the “Feast With Friends” event started with a man named Danny Atchison, a member of the Dream Center Family who passed away last fall before the event could take shape. Now, the event is a tribute to him, and one that the whole community can share.
Those who enjoyed an early Thanksgiving meal, like Rhonda Herron and her children, say they feel like part of the Dream Center family.
“It means a lot," says Rhonda Herron. "You know a lot of times when there is hard times that come around, a lot of people like to help. But with people gathering and seeing this many people helping, donations and everything, it is the most wonderful thing you can see.”
Dozens of people were picked up by a bus to make sure they got a chance to come and fill up on some good food.
“To come out and enjoy a free home-cooked meal, who may or may not otherwise get that," explains event organizer and Dream Center member Rachel Trout. "And we just want to give back, have everybody have a nice warm place to come and enjoy.”
It is an event they say would not be possible without all of the volunteers who worked hard to feed these folks.
“We have over 50 volunteers that have signed up and that’s not counting the crew that comes with the kitchen help," says Trout. "So we’ve got about 75 volunteers that have shown up today to really just give back and do their part to help their community which just warms my heart.”
“Feast With Friends” captured the true spirit of the season: giving to others, and giving thanks.
“I mean, I appreciate it, I’m sure a lot more people do as well," explains Herron. "And for the children to see their friends, the food, the family to gather, it’s just terrific.”
Organizers say this event really sums up their message and mission at the Dream Center, which is to serve the local families right here in our community.
