EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - The grand opening of the new YMCA was held Thursday.
Construction started at 516 Court Street downtown in May of 2018.
Officials say the new building is about the same size as the old YMCA which stills stands right across the street.
Jennifer Brown, the Southwest Indiana YMCA Chief Operating Officer, says she’s excited about what the new "Y" can offer.
A STEM lab, Enrichment Center, Community Outreach Lounge, and a Teaching Kitchen, are all new additions.
She says the goal in these new spaces is to help promote living, learning, and creating better, healthier lives.
“You know the first step is to choose your upgrade, which some people might not choose exercise," Brown said. “They may choose nutrition and changing their diet. It is then applying that to their daily life and then sharing that whether that’s on social media, with their friends, talking to them about what they’ve done to make their lifestyle more healthy and then repeat.”
After going inside, you really can see why city leaders are so proud. The first floor is dedicated to youth and family spaces, and up top on the second-floor is health and wellness.
Not only that, but remember Ascension St. Vincent is in this building too and they will be offering primary care service. So not only is this YMCA going to improve the physical fitness of folks downtown, but leaders hope it will also improve the overall health and wellness of all who come through the doors.
“This is a building that is inclusive and accessible to all," explained Brown. "And I hope we have many people who come in and find programs and resources for them that could change their life. And also volunteer and be part of a change in someone else’s.”
So now that it is officially open, you have 80,000 square-feet of this place that you can come and explore.
