OWENSBORO, KY. (WFIE) - Graduation season is in full swing in the Tri-State.
The first graduating class from the Owensboro Innovation Academy walked across the stage on Sunday afternoon.
History was made with this year’s graduating class. School officials tell us this is the first class to graduate that has gone through all four years of the academy.
In 2014, OIA opened its doors as the first high school in Kentucky to be a part of the national New Tech Network.
“The Owensboro Innovation Academy has always been a vision of ours at the public school system,” said school board member Michael Johnson.
With just over 80 students in their first freshman class, the school has thrived.
“To see these kids flourish and really come into their own after those four years, and now that they’re seniors we’re excited about their future,” said Johnson.
Seth Boone is a member of the OIA class of 2019, and a proud one at that.
“The fact that I was graduating high school, and had everyone that I have ever known all around me it was such a great feeling,” said Seth.
Seth said he owes his accomplishments to his family and all the teachers that were there for him
“When I first went there I was super shy , and now that I have finished high school I am a lot more open and outgoing,” said Seth.
“That first group is an example, because they really have to set the tone for the rest of the groups that are coming,”said Johnson.
Seth plans to head to college in the fall and major in psychology and anthropology. He said OIA changed his life and he hopes others will take the opportunity to let it change their’s as well.
