EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - A new exhibit is now open at Mesker Park Zoo and Botanic Garden.
There was a ribbon cutting on Friday followed by the opportunity to feed hundreds of birds.
The exhibit is called the Budgie Walkabout, it holds hundreds of Australian birds. The outdoor exhibit gives visitors to the zoo the opportunity to walk around with the birds flying above them.
For an extra fee you can grab a feeding stick for the chance to be up close to the birds.
This was all made possible thanks to community donors who contributed about $3 million to make this happen.
Erik Beck, Executive Director of Mesker Park Zoo and Botanic Garden, says is important in understating these animals.
“It’s a great experience," Beck explains. "To be able to get up close to an animal.Really have that connection, is so important, you start to understand that these animals whether they’re in Australia, Africa or Asia, they’re important to our existence as well as their existence. So to have an up close personal experience, makes all the difference in the world. These kids will remember being in this space for a long long time.”
