CANNELTON, Ind. (WFIE) - As reported earlier this month, historic downtown Cannelton has been listed on the Indiana landmarks most endangered list.
Some new plans are in the works to revitalize the district.
It is buildings like the Saint Michael’s old school that this community is coming together to save in Cannelton. Now they are willing to do whatever it takes to make sure this historic district stays alive.
The old Saint Michael’s school has been closed since the early 2000′s, and church officials say it’s in poor condition. The church has been working with Indiana landmarks to find a new owner for the building that will help bring it back to life.
“We would like to sell the building to someone who would use it for a good purpose,” said Larry Schank, a member of the parish council. “And I think the historic landmarks has taken it up to try and find someone to purchase the building for this reason.”
The church has found a buyer for the old school and is now working to finalize the agreement. But, when it comes to the other parts of the district the future is still unknown.
Indiana landmarks says that the most important thing for this city to do is to gain supporters and get those grants so that they can keep this historic district alive.
Officials with Indiana Landmarks also states, they’re looking for a buyer for the old hay building next to city hall. The structure is currently being surveyed.
