POSEY CO., Ind. (WFIE) - Kids in Posey County went on a different kind of field trip on Wednesday.
Several deputy’s and Sheriff Tom Latham went to St. Matthew’s Catholic School to pick up a group of students in their cruisers. They were able to ride along with the windows down all the way to the jail and then got a pizza party.
They have the chance to ask Sheriff Latham some questions.
Sheriff Latham says it is important to develop strong relationships with children at a young age to encourage trust in law enforcement.
“Not only is it lunch with the sheriff, but the sheriff deputies as well, so that gives the children another opportunity to be exposed to law enforcement in a positive way, not so much in a negative way," Sheriff Latham explains. "I think that’s what we need in our society today.”
This was part of a fundraiser back in march where St. Matthew won lunch with the sheriff’s office.
