EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) - Mayor Winnecke made a big announcement to battle hunger issues in the Tri-State.
Winnecke announced May 11 will now be known as “Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive Day. ”This weekend you can get into those pantries or stop at the grocery store to grab a few extra non-perishable items and set them out for your mail carriers to pick up.
Its a collaboration between the Tri-State Food Bank and the National Letter Carriers Union.
“The staples are what to always go for," explains Glen Roberts, Tri-State Food Bank. "The canned vegetables, the canned fruit, cereal, peanut butter would be a great donation because that’s a great source of protein. Try to avoid anything in glass, we don’t want the jars of pickles. Any kind of grains, rice, dried beans, all of that is very good. What you would put on your table.”
To donate, just place a box or a can of non-perishable food next to your mailbox before your letter carrier delivers mail Saturday, May 11.
