NEW HARMONY, IN (WFIE) - You could say the state of business in Posey County is on the nuclear scale, in a good way.

The Southwest Indiana Chamber hosted its annual Posey County report at New Harmony Inn Wednesday.

For the first time, we heard from the general manager of BWXT Nuclear Operations, Dave Richardson, as the event’s keynote speaker.

The nuclear manufacturing plant in Mt. Vernon is in the midst of an $80 million expansion.

We reported late last year that BWX Technologies is adding over 60 new high-paying jobs by 2021.

Richardson announced the plant has already doubled its workforce over the last two years.

“The capabilities are great," Richardson said. "Why Mt. Vernon? It’s the Ohio River.”

The company employs more than 300 people. Richardson said the Mt. Vernon site is the only one of the five BWX sites that produces reactor components for naval vessels and aircraft carriers.

The company’s expansion is part of the reason why the county is home to some of the highest salaries of its kind in Indiana.

“For wages paid and productivity, you rock the house," Southwest IN Chamber’s President & CEO Tara Barney told the crowd.

“Not just for our region, but for the state. So, I’m here to thank you for what you do every day for our region and for our economy so thank you very much,” Barney said.
