Memorial seniors commit to Marion University

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) - As high school graduation day approaches across the Tri-State, more seniors are committing to universities to further not only their academic future, but also athletic careers.

On Thursday, two of those student-athletes signed on the dotted line at Memorial High School, both girls set to attend Marion University in the fall. Ellen Hayhurst, will run Track and Field for the Knights, while Grace Martin will play women’s lacrosse.

Not only will the best friends attend Marion together, but they will call themselves roommates come August.

For the Memorial seniors, Thursday was a dream come true.

“It’s very inspiring because I’ve always looked up to the runners here at Memorial, so just to be that for other people and like upcoming into high school and stuff like that, it’s also a dream come true," explained Hayhurst. "I hope that they follow my lead and I hope that they are successful. I was nervous to go into college but knowing that she’ll be there and we can help each other out, it’s nice.”

“I think it’s been really cool to be able to be close friends with someone and be able to go and know that you guys are both going to get to represent the same school athletically, even though we’re not playing the same sport we still get to push each other and continue on the next level," Martin said. “I never thought I’d get to go to college and play an athletic sport, I started in 8th grade and here I am now.”

Hayhurst will run track and field for the Knights and major in Nursing, while Grace will play women’s lacrosse and major in Elementary Education.
