EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) - Around 9:00 a.m. Tuesday Evansville Police will be closing Westbound I-69 at Highway 41 for a water pipe replacement.
There will be signs and traffic control devices in place in the detour area. The closure will remain for the next seven to 10 days.
Drivers, who try to enter downtown Evansville from westbound I-69, will be detoured at the Highway 41 North exit.
The detour will send traffic onto northbound Highway 41 and Kentucky Avenue. After exiting I-69, traffic will not be allowed to re-enter onto westbound Veteran’s Memorial Parkway.
Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes to enter the downtown area.
The primary corridor is the Lloyd Expressway. Motorist should expect increased traffic on the Lloyd during the closure. Allow extra time to reach your destination.
“We live up near McCutchanville and we come down here once a week or so weather permitting,” explains driver Jimmy Boop. “We always come down 69 and come down through this way down almost right by the river. They can probably use some of these backgrounds through the downtown area to try to get here, but it’s been a long time coming I know that.”
The water department says it’s a very critical line, serving about half of the city. They don’t want to wait for it to break, so they’re trying to stay ahead of potential issues.
The transmission line feeds water to the city’s north and west sides. If it were to break, there would be widespread water restrictions.
A portion of Ingle Street will also be closed.
