EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) - Evansville’s Promise Zone has a new opportunity to get a clean slate. For anyone with a criminal record, this Expungement Clinic will explain if it can be erased and how to do it.

This is the first of its kind. The Promise Zone initiated the Expungement Clinic to help break down barriers stemming from criminal convictions and arrest histories.

When a person has those on their record it can make it difficult to get a job, receive benefits, and find housing. These are all barriers that the Promise Zone works to dissolve.

At the clinic, a lawyer will explain how to navigate Indiana’s Expungement Law. He will teach what can be erased and highlighting the deadlines for eligibility.

Promise Zone Director Silas Matchem tells us this is meant to serve as a resource and that people who come won’t have to share the details of their record.

“We’re just giving you information, and then you have the opportunity to ask questions. It’s completely anonymous across the board. It’s just an opportunity for you to get the information you need so that you can make a decision on what your next steps are,” says Matchem.

The first clinic is Wednesday at Central Library. It is free and runs from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

A second clinic is scheduled for April 23. Matchem says there could be more to follow if enough people attend and show interest.
