Bat killing disease found in New Hampshire

N.H. (AP) - A disease that's killing off bats spreads to yet another state.

A New Hampshire newspaper reports that biologists believe "white nose syndrome" has made its way to the granite state.

It's characterized by a white fungus found on the animals' noses.

The disease is blamed for 400,000 bat deaths in New York, Vermont, Massachusetts and Connecticut, 75 percent of the population in those states.

Bats are vital to the ecosystem, both as flower pollinators and insect predators.

Some bats can eat up to 2,000 insects an hour.

White nose syndrome has also been found in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
