INDIANAPOLIS (AP)- Lawmakers frustrated with the Indiana High School Athletic Association have proposed legislation to eliminate the organization.
The bill proposed by Democratic Rep. David Niezgodski of South Bend would create a new sports administration within the state Department of Education. The IHSAA's commissioner responded that he doesn't believe the proposal is justified.
Niezgodski is upset with how the IHSAA handled the case of Jasmine Watson, a high school basketball player who moved from Elkhart Memorial High School to Washington High School in South Bend. Elkhart school officials disputed her eligibility.
A court ruling supported Watson and allowed her to play, but the IHSAA said it would appeal the decision.
