EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE)- Mater Dei trails in it's own Holiday Wrestling Classic after the first day of action. The Mat Cats are third overall trailing visiting Franklin.

It's the 25th year overall for the Mater Dei Holiday Classic. Wrestling teams from all over the region are in town to compete with one of Indiana's best.

"You don't really get to see them very often," says Mater Dei coach Greg Schaefer of the visiting teams. "They come in and everybody is ready to go. It's a fun atmosphere in a small gym and gets loud."

Schaefer says the tournament always serves as a good growing experience for his younger athletes. "It's a tremendous opportunity for the young guys who come in and don't have much experience. They get to wrestle in front of their home crowds and make a name for themselves."

Zeke Zenthoefer, who wrestles at 145 for the Mat Cats, picked up a pin in one late afternoon match. Zenthoefer says he likes "the tournament atmosphere and being able to wrestle individually."

But as many other Mater Dei wrestlers will tell you, you have to be ready for a high level of competition.
