Taking a Stand: Evansville Fire Trucks

Posted: Updated:

By Vice-President/General Manager Debbie Bush

Last week, Evansville Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel revealed the results of an independent investigation of our city fire trucks.

The Mayor's investigation was ordered after complaints about maintenance surfaced at City budget meetings.  E-mails citing specific examples of shoddy work were sent to City Council members as well as to us at 14News.

The evaluation found that of twenty-two of the city fire trucks, most were in good shape.  Three received a poor grade.  While the Mayor says they haven't been able to find evidence of "fraud," they have found falsifying of work orders and shoddy record keeping.

It sounds like we dodged a bullet.  We are so lucky that there wasn't an accident putting our firefighters and our citizens at risk.

It's great that a firefighter will now manage the pending repairs.  And, there will continue to be an annual independent inspection.

But we urge the Mayor to continue to look into the record keeping problem and find out what really happened...and WHO is to blame.  And, we hope he will report that back to us as well.

Falsifying records shouldn't be tolerated.  And, safety shouldn't be taken for granted.
