EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) - Higher heating bills are on the way, but there are ways to soften the blow, things you can do around the house to help.
In the winter or summer more than half of your utility bill goes toward heating or cooling your home.
Regular maintenance prevents surprises, and something can be as simple as changing the furnace filter.
"It greatly improves the efficiency of the system through cleaning the air filter," Eric Hagan, J.E. Shekell, said. "So staying on top of the problem, you know, it's really out of sight and out of mind. It's something a lot of people don't think about until the last moment, until they begin to have a problem."
Officials recommend checking your heating and cooling system twice a year. These checks not only insure efficiency, but prevent gas leaks.
For some extra protection Hagan said to be safe.
"Any time you have a fuel burning appliance whether it's a water heater or furnace any of the sort strongly recommend having a CO detector in the house," Hagan said.
If you want to upgrade to a higher efficiency heating and cooling system, Chase Kelley with Vectren says there is help.
"Our $200 rebate will help you bridge the gap in terms of going ahead and making the extra purchase and dollars needed to jump to that higher efficiency unit," Kelley said. "At the same time, it's going to quickly pay for itself because it uses so much less natural gas."
