A city golf competition started at Fendrich Golf Course Sunday.

It was round one of the Women's City Tournament. Sixteen players entered into the championship flight, including some of the top college and high school players in the area.

Heather Schroeder won the event in 1998, took last year off with an injury but came back strong Sunday with a first round 75.

She is tied for second, six shots behind University of Evansville standout Crissy Higgins, who led the way with a round of 69.

"The first birdie I mad was actually a mistake, I was lucky," Higgins said. "I stuck her behind a tree and ended up on the green somehow and rolled it in. That's when I knew it could be a good day."

Heather Schroeder, who finished the first day tied for second, said it was a pretty solid day.

"Basically on the front nine I just stayed in a grove. I didn't off-hit any shots and played very consistently," Schroeder said. "I was even on the front. The back nine I had trouble on 10 and 12 and it cost me a couple strokes there. I made a birdie here or there, but then I made a birdie to make it up. It was a lot of fun and Fendrich's not an easy course.

Vandu Gooch finished the first day tied with Schroeder for second.
