Indiana continues to lead the Midwest in low unemployment rates, with Evansville among the state's top cities for job growth, according to new figures released by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.
Numbers released by the state agency indicate that the rate of growth in job over the last year in the Evansville metro area was up by 1.7 percent. It was surpassed only by the Elkhart-Goshen metro area, up 2.2 percent, and matches job growth rate in the South Bend metro area, which was also up 1.7 percent.
Statewide, Indiana's unemployment rate of 4.5 percent is below that of Ohio at 5.5 percent, Michigan, 7.1 percent, Kentucky, 5.2 percent, and Illinois, at 5.6 percent.
The areas in the state with the highest unemployment rates were Fayette County and Crawford County, both with rates of over 8 percent.
