A farm hand says he saw Flight 5191 struggling to gain altitude as it reached the end of Blue Grass Airport's 3500-foot runway.
Bill Giltner said, in a published report, as the airliner reached the end of the runway Sunday morning, it broke-through an eight-foot chain-link fence, bounced off the ground and was almost airborne until it brushed a clump of trees.
Giltner said he'd been looking out a window of his trailer and walked outside in time to see a "a ball of fire" followed by a large plume of smoke from behind the trees.
Giltner said he saw the plane first hit the metal fence at the perimeter of the airport, then he watched as its tail scraped the ground. He said sparks flew from the rear of the plane.
