Community Reacts to Teens' Deaths

This was a one vehicle accident that involved five teenagers. All five were students or former students at Forest Park High School in Ferdinand.   Police say 18-yearold Tyler Messmer of Ferdinand, was driving the extended cab truck. They say he tried to pass a vehicle on State Road 162 but was unsuccessful because of oncoming traffic. They say he then tried to pass on the right side of the road but lost control of the truck and hit a tree. Messmer and another passenger in the front seat, 18-year old Michael Friedel of Huntingburg survived the crash and were taken to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville. The three passengers in the back seat, the driver's sister, 16-year-old Sara Messmer, and sisters, 16-year-old Brittany Atkins and 17-year old Tiffany Atkins, both of Jasper were killed. At forest park high school, the principal was shocked when he heard the news. Troopers say none of the victims were wearing seatbelts.
