Meningitis Death: Quick Response Saves IL Pre-School

Knox County, Illinois health officials say a quick response from school and medical officials seems to have prevented a deadly strain of bacterial meningitis from spreading.

Sheila Redington, 44, died Sunday at OSF Saint Francis Medial Center in Peoria. She first fell ill while teaching Tuesday, at Costa Catholic School in Galesburg.

Knox County Health Department spokeswoman Carrie Andrews says Redington had meningococcal meningitis. She says no additional cases have been reported since Redington's diagnosis last week.

Costa's preschool was closed on Wednesday but opened again Friday, after the rooms were fogged with a cleansing chemical and scrubbed.

Two other teachers and Redington's family have also begun taking antibiotics as a precaution.
