EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) - New information on a major traffic alert as Riverside Drive and Ingle Street will have to be shut down again for pipe repairs.
Crews inspected pipes last week and it was pretty much the worst possible outcome. Crews found that all three pipe segments need replaced.
Two on Riverside Drive and one on Ingle Street. The closings were originally put in place so water crews could inspect a 36 inch water main.
We knew some additional closures were possible depending on the damage they found.
Now, we are told the replacement pipes will have to be custom ordered. And that Evansville Water and Sewer Utility crews will need to put together a well-coordinated repair plan.
Water and Sewer Utility Director Allen Mounts says all of this will take several weeks, but is a necessary safety precaution.
"You don't know that you have a problem until it happens, and then it's too late," Mounts explained. "So we want to get ahead of the curve, identify where we have a risk, and then map out a plan to take care of that."
Mounts tells us it's too early to say when crews will shut down the roads again or how long it will take. But he doesn't expect it to impact the Mickey's Kingdom build in September.
