JASPER, IN (WFIE) - Strassenfest starts this Thursday in Jasper and set up is already happening to celebrate the 40th anniversary.
Crews are already hard at work putting up decorations and tents for what is the 40th anniversary of the street festival.
"Strassenfest is a celebration of the Dubois County and Jasper's heritage, or German heritage, in a street festival," Mike Ackerman, Strassenfest Committee Chairperson, explained. "Strassen means street in German, so street festival."
40 years of the street festival and the enthusiasm surrounding Strassenfest is going strong. Ackerman says this year they'll pay homage to the festivals beginnings.
"We are honoring as our hauf marshall, our grand marshall this year, the original 1979 committee," Ackerman explained. "That committee did so many things to put such great policies in place that has allowed the Strassenfest to not just survive, but to thrive and grow. We are just blessed to have them here to get us off to a good start."
Traditional events, music, and food will collide with rides, entertainment and community involvement.
"One of the things that Jasper can be most proud of is the way that the people here welcome their visitors to the Jasper Strassenfest," Ackerman said. "The streets are filled, we've got music, we've got three stages going with great entertainment. There's rides, there's lots of events and things to do and it's just a joyous, fun atmosphere to be here."
Strassenfest begins this Thursday at 5 p.m. and will run through Sunday.
