School bus overturns on Peach Orchard Rd.

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

The Richmond County Sheriff's Office is on the scene of an overturned school bus on Peach Orchard Road and Tobacco Road.

According to the sheriff's office, the crash happened at around 6:08 a.m. and involved a mini-van and the bus. When deputies arrived on the scene, the bus was overturned in the woodline next to Peach Orchard Road. The driver of the van fled the scene on foot. Investigators are searching for them.

According to Kaden Jacobs with the Richmond County School System, there were no students on the bus at the time. The driver of the bus was taken to Doctors Hospital with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries.

    Next month the R&R Youth and Community Empowerment organization will honor people in Augusta and the CSRA for doing their part in the community to make a difference and to pay tribute to Martin Luther King Jr for the 50th anniversary of his death. Some of those honorees met Saturday at Big T's Seafood, to talk about the importance of continuing to honor his legacy.

    Once again early voting turn out has been low for primary elections. Officials say the numbers are looking similar to the 2014 election.   The Richmond County Board of Elections says around 30 thousand people voted in the 2014 primaries. The executive director, Lynn Bailey,  says they are on track to meet that same number this year.
