TRI-STATE (WFIE) - For several weeks sheriff's deputies in Vanderburgh and Warrick Counties say a "traveling theft ring" came to the Tri-State and stole more than $30,000 worth of jewelry and cash.
On Wednesday, our cameras were rolling as seven people were taken into custody. Five were arrested.
"These were the types of thieves or burglars that they come into an area, they hit it for a week or so and then they move out," Vanderburgh County Sheriff Dave Wedding said. "It makes them harder to apprehend. In this case, we don't know why they stayed in Evansville a little bit longer, which helped lead to their arrest."
We're told some of the stolen items have been recovered. For one couple who was targeted, they say they are so glad to have their keepsakes back.
"We were just happy because mainly they had found the jewelry and they were caught and hopefully they can't do this to anybody else," one burglary victim said.
Sheriff's deputies say the group responsible was supposed to check out of Americas Best Value Inn Wednesday morning.
"We are just thankful to God that they didn't harm us or anything," the couple said. "They didn't threaten us at all but you look back and you think they could have but God takes care of us and we just have to be very, very thankful."
"Everybody should be alert for these type of people and we are thankful that we didn't encounter them and get hurt over it," the couple said.
