TX Opens Schools To Refugee Students

New Media Producer: Kerry Corum

At least for some students displaced by Hurricane Katrina, life is about to become somewhat normal again.

Texas officials are announcing that their public schools will accept the children being sheltered in the state. If they come from Louisiana, Mississippi or Alabama, the kids will be classified as homeless and can then be enrolled without having to show proof of residence.

The Texas Education Agency also says it's going to relax its normal teacher-to-student ratios, and will waive immunization requirements for the children displaced by the storm.

Schools in Austin, Texas, are already working to get the refugee students new clothes, backpacks and school supplies.
