Gov. Ivey unveils new plan for securing Alabama's schools

MONTGOMERY, AL (WALA) -

Keeping kids safe at school taking center stage in Montgomery Tuesday.

Gov. Kay Ivey talked about new plans to improve school security.

Ivey said she's calling on the legislature to pass a bill redirecting surplus education tax money

She said, "I support Senator Trip Pittman's Senate Bill 323, which permits funds appropriated to the Education Advancement and Technology Fund to be used for school security purposes."

Pittman said the money, estimated at up to $41 million, could pay for metal detectors, stronger doors, and enhanced video monitoring, with school systems deciding what they need.

The governor also wants to better identify problems before they happen.

Ivey said, "Schools will be required to develop a plan to identify students at risk for committing violence to themselves or others, and schools will measure student engagement to prevent kid from falling through the cracks. "

The governor also wants the interim state superintendent of education to standardize emergency operations plans in schools.

Superintendent Ed Richardson said, "All of them have a plan.  In some cases, they have not been updated."

But the secretary of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency talked about what was needed to make the plan work. .

Hal Taylor said, "We must identify funding.  People come to me and they say and ask, 'Do you think this could happen in Alabama?'  Absolutely."

The governor said she wants a new advisory group she's appointing, called a SAFE Council, to report to her with specific plans by April 30th.

The Republican-led House narrowly passed the Farm Bill on Thursday. The GOP-backed measure, which covers food and farm policy legislation, passed 213-211. It's a whopping $867 billion package that renews the safety net for farmers. But it's the Supplemental Nutrition Program (SNAP) changes that are controversial.
