SPENCER CO., IN (WFIE) - The Perry County Port Authority is working to fix two very old rail bridges in the Tri-State.
They are applying for a more than $4-million federal grant to help fund some of the Bridging into the 22nd Century project. That project includes replacing two rail bridges. One is right outside of Troy, the other outside of Evanston.
Both bridges have some components that have been there since they were built in the 1900s.
Although authorities say the bridges are safe right now, these improvements will prolong their lives. Officials said those bridges are the last two out of 11 that need to be replaced.
They are writing the grant right now, and once they submit it, it will take a few months for them to learn whether or not they got the money.
Officials said if they get the money, they hope to begin work right away and by April 2020 the project should be finished.
If Perry County Port Authority doesn't get the money, they said they will find another way to fix the bridges.
