Last minute filing tips from volunteer tax assistant

WFIE WFIE
TRI-STATE (WFIE) -

The deadline to file your taxes is quickly approaching.

You've got an extra day thanks to a federal holiday, but Tuesday, April 18 is the absolute last day to file.

Nibby Priest, a volunteer with VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) in Henderson, says when visiting a free tax site, make sure you have your social security card with all the dependents on your tax return, your drivers license, and insurance information.

Priest said the most common thing people forget is proof of their health insurance. If you forget that, there's a fine. That's why he says preparing for next year will help you out significantly.

Keep your tax information in a file folder all year long," said Priest. "Your medical bills you paid, the tax bills that you might pay for property or vehicle tax. Start today to keeping that organized for next year."

If you want to do your taxes on your own, Priest highly recommends to file them electronically.

There are still VITA locations available in the Tri-State, according to www.irs.gov.
