(WFIE) - You have probably seen a NASCAR Race and maybe even a Motocross race, but we bet you haven't seen a drift trike race and that's because it is a brand new developing sport just starting to take over the pavement.
Brian Smith says, "It's the first of it's kind in the country."
This weekend, Diamond Lake Resort hosted the first ever Formula Drift Trike Races.
Seventy-five trikes with drivers from 11 states took to the drift trike track, and it's a sport that is only starting to be born.
It's also a sport for everyone.
"What I love about it is that I am 62-years-old, and I am not too old to do this and it's for kids of all ages," Smith said.
Nick Damin was one of the event planners for this race, and a video is what sparked his interest in all of this.
"I watched a video on YouTube, and I fell in love with it," Damin said. "I actually had a big wheel as a kid and we wore the tires off of it."
The sport is similar to riding around on big wheels, but different than a lot of racing you may see because it's a bike with three wheels, it's motorized, and it's not all about speed. That's what the racers love.
The bikes can race, but they are built for drifting, and they are customizable.
The fact that they all run different trikes spikes the level of competition, and that is what they love about the sport, but as it grows, they'd like to have certain qualifications laid out.
"We would like to see guys to where we have a rule book and people follow that rule book and it brings everyone closer together competition-wise," Damin said.
The sport has already grown tremendously, and now that one race is in the books, they hope more are to follow and perhaps even sanctioned events.
