Owensboro honors the life of David McCrady

Firefighters, family, and community members say their final goodbyes to former Owensboro Battalion Chief, David McCrady.

McCrady passed away last week but the support seen at the funeral today shows his legacy will live on.

Those who dedicate their lives to protect others don't go unnoticed, and when they pass on, the entire community feels it.

"David was a great friend to everyone. Strangers? He knew no strangers." Dwane Smeathers, President of the Green River Firefighter's Association, says.

Hundreds of family members, people in the community, and firefighters gathered to celebrate the life of someone who they say truly made a difference.

"He cared about his fellow man, he cared about his community. He was well involved in all areas of the fire service. He never had a bad day," Steve Leonard, Battalion Chief says.

From St. Stephen's Cathedral to Resurrection Cemetery, local fire officials showed their respect. Some lined the street with a salute. Others stood under a flag waving proudly over Highway 54 knowing this co-worker, father, husband, friend, and hero deserved every bit of today.

"He would be humbled," Smeathers says.

With final salutes and final respects, his fellow firefighters say the legacy of David McCrady will be making a difference in Kentucky for years to come.
