CAPITOLA, CA (KSBW/CNN) - Police in southern California are investigating a murder-suicide that left a father and his 8-year-old daughter dead.

Authorities said the incident happened Sunday afternoon at a mall parking lot.

They said the girl's mother called police to alert them that her husband was trying to kill himself. When authorities got there, they found the father and daughter inside a car, both with gunshot wounds.

"The evidence itself at the crime scene, in conjunction with the witness statements and the statement from the woman who called police initially, together will hopefully answer some of the questions that, at this point of the investigation, are simply not answered," said Capitola Police Chief Terry McManus. "We do know, based upon our investigation, that the family was together for a portion of the day at the mall prior to the tragic outcome here."

McManus said the woman told authorities the three had been shopping inside the mall when the father began threatening to kill himself.

The mall parking lot and nearby roads were shut down for several hours due to the shooting.
