CARBONDALE, IL (WFIE) -

A program at an Illinois University is doing bringing beer to the classroom, but they aren't drinking it, they're learning to make it.

The Masters Brewers Association of America is giving Southern Illinois University's fermentation program a stamp of approval. The program started last year and offers bachelor's degrees in fermentation sciences.

The director of the program says recognition like this is a benefit for the program and students hoping to brew their way into a career.

"It's an outside recognition that we've set things up in a way that's recognized by the industry and should serve our students well within the industry, and help students when they come from the program and give something of a stamp of approval for the program," said Matt McCarol, the Director of SIU Fermentation Science Institute.

A rigorous curriculum and new state of the art equipment are included in the requirements to be recognized.

Fermentation science includes more than just making alcohol. Students also research energy, pharmaceuticals, and food safety.
