Henderson's 'Cops & Kids' event in desperate need of funds

HENDERSON, KY (WFIE) -

Getting into the holiday spirit often includes giving back.

Many law enforcement agencies around the country, hold shopping events with less-fortunate kids.

This year, Henderson's version, "Cops & Kids," is in desperate need of funds. They're only half-way to their goal this year, and the event is less than two weeks away.

Typically, members of the Fraternal Order of Police said they're usually 3-quarters full in their funds at this time, but with it being so low, they worry they'll have to make adjustments to how many kids they help or how much they give.

This is Henderson's 16th year participating in Cops & Kids, formerly known as Shop with a Cop. They like to help around 50 kids and each child usually gets a budget around $200.

Most of the money is used to help the children for the upcoming cold weather, so things they buy the kids are shoes, a nice winter jacket, socks, hygiene items, and of course, a small toy.

Dewayne Reneer, a long-time FOP member who loves participating in this event said this is one of their favorite events so the fact they're low in funds now is really discouraging.

"The hugs we receive from the kids and seeing their eyes light up," said Reneer. "It's amazing to see a child pick out a pair of shoes let alone everything else that goes along with it. Believe it or not it's not so much the toys for the kids as it is to be able to wear some nice clothes to wear to school, a nice winter-heavy coat, and it's just overwhelming. I mean you see the big guys cry."

Henderson's Cops & Kids"event will be held Tuesday, December 13th at the Henderson Walmart.

You can drop off a donation at the FOP Lodge, the police department, or the sheriff's office.

You can also send in donations to this address:
