Mobile home destroyed by fire in Webster Co.

Investigators are trying to figure out what caused a fire that destroyed a mobile home in Webster County early Wednesday morning.

Crews were on the scene for several hours in the 500 block of Airline Road in Clay. When they first arrived on the scene around 4 a.m., they said the double-wide home had completely burned to the ground.

"We have no way of knowing when this fire really started," said Deputy Chief Kerry Dehaven.

Dehaven said had it not been for a neighbor, they may not have been called to the fire until it burned itself out.

"We figure anywhere from an hour and a half to two hours before it was seen by a neighbor who came outside to smoke and just happened to see it," said Dehaven.

He also said it's common for fires to go unnoticed in rural areas.

Crews will be out there later to see if they can investigate a cause, but they say that's going to be nearly impossible with the amount of damage that has already happened.
