Madisonville man advocating for crosses replacement at war memorial

A Madisonville man is asking for the town's help honoring World War II Veterans in Hawaii.

Scott Rodgers visited the Punchbowl war memorial last month and noticed there aren't any crosses next to the gravestones. So he has asked the city council to ask Kentucky legislators to work with Hawaiian legislators to add crosses to each of the fallen tombstones.

Rodgers' father served in the United states air force in World War II and died when Rodgers was only 10 years old.

"I think it would honor them men the past the present and future of soldiers. I mean it would when you drove in there, instead of seeing the crosses, you would just see a green field," Rodgers said.

An official with the Punchbowl cemetery says the cemetery board has chosen the flat, granite grave markers by design because they are flush with the ground.

There are no plans to add crosses at this time.
