EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

On Sunday, SWIRCA hosted its first-ever "Hope-Fest Campaign." It's an annual event for those who have conquered all different forms of cancer.

Karen Thornton beat stage 2 breast cancer during the month of September. She used the time since to reflect on how she beat the disease that claimed her mother's life.

"It was just a matter of getting up every day and going to work," Karen said.

Karen inspired people like Jessica Roller, who says being diagnosed with breast cancer scared her about finishing her pursuit of a degree in occupational therapy. After treatment, she says it taught her about empathy.

"I am no longer the person I was before. I think initially when I was diagnosed after treatment, I would come back to the person I was before I was diagnosed," Jessica said.

She will graduate in December, with added wisdom and a story she can share with the other survivors in the room.

The day ended with a survivor's stroll parade and a Q and A with local oncologists. We were told this certainly won't be the last time they host the event.
