Deputy surprises girls with gift after serious car accident

A surprise from a stranger is lifting the spirits of two Kentucky girls, hospitalized in a serious crash. They were on their way to school when it happened. It’s a day they especially didn't want to miss because it was hat day.

Pride Elementary schoolers Karynn and Jade were in the backseat of their mom's van Wednesday morning when an oncoming driver fell asleep on Rose Creek Road in Madisonville and hit them head-on. The girls and their mother, Christina Trautman never made it to school, instead of landing at Baptist Health. The driver who hit them died.

A deputy working the wreck and recognizing the traumatic situation and its impact on the girls had an idea to comfort and surprise them. Pink princess cowgirl hats.

"The loved them, especially my oldest one. She loves, loves, loves, loves, those types of hats. So that kind of brightened their mood,” said Christina Trautman, the girl’s mother.

The family says the deputy went above and beyond that day, and tonight, they're thanking him for helping put a big bright spot on such a tragic day.

The mother tells me both girls have broken bones and head injuries from the accident.

They're expected to be okay and will be returning to school on Monday.
