Dozens of Tri-State non-profits lose thousands in funding

It took weeks of debates and protests, but Monday night Evansville's City Council approved the 2017 city budget.

As we have reported, dozens of non-profits will see huge funding hits.

We've learned $121,000  will be cut from more than a dozen local non-profits in Evansville. Across the board, these programs saw 50% cuts on top of ones they received last year.

One of those Non-Profits, Youth Resources. The Executive Director tells us they're not complaining about these cuts, they understand the city is in a tough spot but now, they need help moving forward.

800 students are involved in Youth Resources every year- a group dedicated to giving teens the chance to lead and opportunities to develop.

Councilmember Anna Hargis tells us the main motivation behind these cuts is balancing the demands of rising healthcare costs for city employees.

She says while you may not see an immediate impact on these groups, it's how they have to restructure their priorities which will hit them in the end

"There are a lot of other organizations on there that lost more than us or less than us. But for us, yeah. That was a significant investment in all four of our programs." says Youth Resources Executive Director, Laura Ferguson.

The $19,000 they received from Local Income Tax funds last year funded many of their efforts. Now, they'll only get half of that.

And they do a lot! From their teen advisory council with 150 student leaders who do over 3,000 hours of service every year to their teen power clubs.

"From seventh grade to senior year, they turn out to be incredibly powerful young leaders," said Laura. "Who've made over the course of six years a really big difference in our community."

Now, employees here are forced yet again to get creative. Laura says they'll look to other grants, State funding and individual donations for help.

"It's just unfortunate that it's so much, so quickly," says Laura.
