CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

The Cleveland Clinic is making medical history with a groundbreaking transplant surgery.

Doctors performed the nation's first uterus transplant.  This could mean great things for women who have not been able to get pregnant.

The clinic started screening candidates last year, and the first nine-hour surgery took place Wednesday.

The 26-year-old patient received the uterus from a deceased organ donor. She is currently in stable condition.

Clinic doctors will talk about the procedure and the patient at a news conference next week.

The Clinic research team will continue to screen transplant candidates with Uterine Factor Infertility (UFI), an irreversible condition affecting 3 percent to 5 percent of women worldwide.
