New Harmony prepares for annual Christmas celebration

NEW HARMONY, IN (WFIE) -

New Harmony festival organizers are getting ready for the town's annual Christmas celebration this weekend.

The "Christmas in New Harmony Festival" includes a tree lighting, local Christmas shopping, parades, and of course, Santa.

Jim Spann, the president of the New Harmony Business Associates says for some people, this is like a small family reunion, one of the big meanings behind this festival.

"New Harmony is kind of a classic small town, and it's about keeping that alive and allowing other people, future generations, to be a part of that as well and have that experience for themselves,” said Spann.

The event kicks off Friday at 5:30 p.m. with the tree lighting.

Saturday and Sunday are filled with activities like arts and crafts shopping, food and a parade.

A deadly virus is threatening the crawfish industry in Southwest Louisiana. It's called white spot syndrome virus and it was first discovered in Thailand, but somehow it made its way to ponds in South Louisiana and specialists are struggling to find the funds to research a solution.  “The catch was increasing and increasing and then it dropped 70% and that's when you saw the dead crawfish floating in the water,” said a crawfish farmer of 34 years, Ian Garbarino.
