Henderson family hopes to raise awareness about brain condition

HENDERSON, KY (WFIE) -

A young Henderson boy was diagnosed with Chiari Malformation and his family hopes to raise awareness about the condition.

Chiari Malformation is a structural defect in the part of the brain that controls balance.

6-year-old Jacob Cooper is having brain and spinal surgery in Louisville in two weeks.

Jacob had his first surgery when he was three months old.

The family has received donations to assist with Jacob's medical expenses.

But they also hope to raise awareness about Chiari Malformation.

"If more people knew about it, then more research could be done to find out if they had it,” said Ashley Cooper.  “Some people don't even know that they have it until they are a lot older. We found out early on, which helps him because he won't have as many headaches now."

So far, over $500 has been raised for Jacob and his medical expenses.

You can learn more about Jacob's journey on a Facebook page started for him and the disease.
