Taking a Stand: Learn the signs of suicide

VANDERBURGH CO., IN (WFIE) - Suicide is a very important topic in mental health issues.

It's one of the leading causes of death outside of motor vehicle accidents and has been at a higher rate here in the Vanderburgh County area for some time.

There are a number of suicide prevention tips that we can use to help people that might having difficulties.

The first thing to do is notice if a person's behavior or activities have changed. People who are having suicidal thoughts often times are suffering from depression, or other mood disorders, and you will notice that maybe they're not sleeping well. Maybe they're sleeping excessively.

They may become more isolated.

More tearful?

They may even be talking about suicide, and that they don't feel life is worth living.

Often times as they prepare to end their lives, or feel hopeless, they'll give away prized possessions, disengage, become more withdrawn.

If you know anyone who is having these symptoms, the first thing to do is show your support, and that you care for them.
