Sierra Club members concerned about electric rates in Owensboro

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -

Earlier this week, members of the Sierra Club protested high electric rates in Evansville.

Tonight, they took their complaint to Owensboro.

The environmental group says OMU's Elmer Smith Plant is near the end of its life span.

They want to see the city transition to a more affordable, clean energy source.

The Sierra Club believes it would benefit the environment, reduce asthma, and create jobs.

OMU officials say they plan to shut down a 145 megawatt coal fired generator at the Elmer Smith plant by 2019.
