EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) - New Evansville fire department recruits are being put to the test.
This is Week 5 of a 10-week course to be a certified firefighter.
14NEWS obtained helmet cam video from inside a burning structure.
Officials tell us it's about 900 degrees inside the burn chamber, and they use it to get recruits ready for being inside a real fire.
"It's imperative that we get them into some sort of heat at this point," said Rick Whitehouse, an EFD instructor. "It's hard to simulate a house fire. This is the closest thing we can get. The temperatures here are much lower than what a structure fire would be. We're trying to expose them to a little temperature, smoke and zero visibility."
Four recruits are going through this round of classes for EFD.
