Pastors receive active shooter training from Owensboro Police

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -

Owensboro Police trained local pastors on how to prevent a church shooting or handle one if it happens.

This isn't the first training session either.  Authorities taught a previous group the same skills.

Sergeant JD Winkler says about 60 people came out to Saint Stephen Cathedral for the session.

Winkler says the first line of defense is obvious.

Keep exterior doors locked and use video cameras to keep track of who's coming and going.

“I think I was impressed by his statement ‘don't be fearful.’  Don't live in fear and that there are some simple things we can do to alert ourselves,” says Father Jerry Riney of Saint Stephen Cathedral.

Winkler says if there is an active shooter in a church, people should leave their belongings and quickly get out.
