Photo of Silverton firefighter comforting young boy racks up shares on Facebook

SILVERTON, OR (KPTV) -

A photo of a Silverton firefighter comforting a young boy near the County Line 2 fire has been shared hundreds of times on Facebook, and offers a glimpse into the human element of a massive firefighting effort.

Daniel Brown, who returned to his home in Silverton Monday afternoon, said he explained to the boy that he was there to help, and would do everything he could to protect his home.

“He was trying to talk to me, but with the wind coming through there as fast as it was, I couldn’t really hear him, so I kneeled down,” said Brown.

Brown and three other volunteer firefighters from Silverton were tasked with being the last line of defense for dozens of homes in the path of the fire, standing by with hoses should the flames get too close, which at times they did.

“A couple of times, it was right on top of us,” said Brown. “It was pretty intense.  All of us on the crew at one point were coughing and hacking and eyes watering.”

Brown said he and his fellow firefighters managed to protect every home they were assigned to, including the home of the boy he took time to comfort.

The Republican-led House narrowly passed the Farm Bill on Thursday. The GOP-backed measure, which covers food and farm policy legislation, passed 213-211. It's a whopping $867 billion package that renews the safety net for farmers. But it's the Supplemental Nutrition Program (SNAP) changes that are controversial. The bill calls for tougher work requirements for SNAP recipients, known as food stamps. It could cause millions of Americans to lose benefits. So, what would...
