Brush fire near Roosevelt, WA burns approx. 10k acres; not contained

ROOSEVELT, WA (KPTV) -

A fire that began Tuesday afternoon in Klickitat County had spread to approximately 10,000 acres by Wednesday morning as firefighters worked to get the flames under control.

About 300 people in Roosevelt were told to evacuate their homes Tuesday night because of the fire, which began around 1 p.m. near Wishram.

Crews were dealing with dry conditions and gusty winds as they attempted to get the flames under control.

The fire had burned several outbuildings, but so far, no homes had been destroyed.

Firefighters said the fire was zero percent contained, but they were making progress and expected that number to go up.

Wednesday morning, evacuation orders were lowered to Level 1 and residents were allowed to return to their homes. A Level 1 notice means residents should be ready to leave at a moment's notice.

The fire continues to affect traffic on State Road 14. According to the Washington Department of Transportation, westbound SR-14 is closed at milepost 134 outside of Roosevelt and the eastbound lanes are closed at the junction with Highway 97.

WSDOT did not have an estimate for when the affected lanes would reopen.

The American Red Cross set up a temporary shelter at Bickleton School for those who had to evacuate their homes.
